2009 First Kill

It's been a slow start to 2009 hunting season for the Fort Flambeau crew. This one was bagged during legal hours only.. Our first kill was made on Sunday night at 8 PM.

The beast started heavy but the final drag to the buck pole was manageable. We have a few days to try to bag another beast?

Cabin Stew

This recipe I can't claim as my own.. I've received it second hand, from an old timer in Dairyland, who has since moved back to his home in Frederic. It has stood the test of time, as this new generation will soon find out. The aroma's of venison, pork, and beef; along with taters, rutabagas, carrots, onions, and some secret ingredients, overtake my river valley. The smokey flavors abound! The perfect fire is hard to keep balanced.. Too hot and you'll scorch it, too cool and it won't simmer the six hours necessary to meld the savory flavors together.. This feller here has it all figured out..

The first pot of stew over my new fire pit. I think this will be the first of many stew's made with the meat in the pot, from the game that was shot (or bought), from the Fort Flambeau crew.

Come on baby light my fire..

Over the years some of the most entertaining moments have been had around my fire pit. It has changed some since the days of yore, but the ambiance and outcome is the same.. A place for those to gather, to discuss the days catch (or lack there of), to discuss lofty taxes and crooked politicians, or to just relax and reflect on the day spent in the north woods. To enjoy the peace and quiet, with no cell phone service, where you are bound to hear wolves or coyotes every night, or bump into a bear..Future girl scouts being taught by an old indian..
Throw a line in and cozy up..
A gathering place for all after dinner..
Past girl scouts..
The crutch fire poker..
Another great nite to keep warm by the fire..
The new fire pit - providing gouey treats for future late night guests.. Flan
Just when people think the fun is done. The toys are put away, the temperature drops, the white stuff piles up and darkness comes a bit early. People don't visit as often. I do not understand.
I am just as happy as ever to have guests in those cooler and whiter months. There is much fun to be had. And the beauty is unparalleled in its own pristine way.

Life is good...even in the colder whiter months. Ruski

Upgrades

Over the years the people that visit me have done amazing projects. Although I was never self concience about by appearance, I do have to admit that the upgrades have been very nice.

I used to have an irregular sized top as you can see. However after last year's cosmetic reconstructive upgrade I now have a more robust and uniform shape.

My appearance has also been enhanced by smoothing out uneven countours in my front yard. 8 yards of fill was used to make me look by best.

I even received an enlarged fire pit!! This expanded area will allow me to load additional wood in and produce more flame and heat.

A new rack was also installed out the back to hold all of the tubes my friends will use over the summer. This is just a small portion of the upgrades I have received. I am very greatful to everyone who gets to enjoy me and is able to give a little something back!! Ruski

Big Jim

Our camp 4 wheeler - Big Jim. A 1987 full size V8 with lift kit - helps us get around the forest. He doesn't quite look as nice as this now, but as Wade says he is sure enjoying his retirement years serving us at the cabin.
Always more fun with the top off! Flan-Man
